What is a sales funnel? In simple terms.

A sales funnel is the path from stranger to paying customer, drawn so you can see where people drop out. Here is what it is, how to find yours, and how to fix the leaks.

A sales funnel is just the path a stranger takes to become a paying customer, drawn as steps so you can count how many people make it through each one. It is called a funnel because the numbers get smaller at every step.

A real example

A kitchen renovation company:

  • 1,000 people see an Instagram post or a Google result this month.
  • 120 visit the website.
  • 18 fill in the quote form or call.
  • 10 get a quote.
  • 3 sign.

That is the funnel. Every business has one, whether or not anyone has written it down. The point of writing it down is that you can now ask: where do we lose people, and what would it take to lose fewer?

The stages, in plain words

  • Attention: they find out you exist (search, ads, a sign, a referral).
  • Interest: they look (website, profile, reviews).
  • Enquiry: they raise a hand (form, call, message).
  • Conversation and quote: you talk, you send a number.
  • Decision: they say yes, no, or nothing.
  • After the sale: reviews, repeat work, referrals, which feed the top again.

Where small businesses usually leak

  • Between interest and enquiry: a slow site, no phone number, a form with twelve fields.
  • Between enquiry and conversation: nobody replies for a day. This is the most expensive leak and the easiest to fix with an instant reply and a CRM.
  • Between quote and decision: no follow-up. People forget, get busy, compare. Three follow-ups over ten days change this number more than any discount.

How to find your numbers

You don't need software to start. Count last month: enquiries, quotes, wins. Then look at your website and ad stats for visits. Four numbers on a napkin is a funnel. A CRM does the counting for you from then on, and it also does the replying and the following up, which is why we always set one up.

Funnel pages and "funnel software"

Online you'll see "funnels" sold as a specific kind of landing page with a countdown timer and three upsells. That is one tactic for one kind of product. For a service business, your funnel is your profile, your site, your reply speed and your follow-up. Fix those four and you have a better funnel than most funnel software produces.

Our take

Draw yours this week, with real numbers. Then fix the biggest leak first, which for almost everyone is the reply time. If you want it built and measured for you, that is exactly the sales architecture work we do.
